The dog is one of the few domesticated animals to be so emotionally associated with Cyprus folklore.

Up until the first half of the 20th century, the dog helped tend to the livestock/herding and at night guarded the house and acted as a companion to the children.

According to the Cypriots: The dog prays "God, please give health and wealth to my master so that he will have something to give me to eat." The cat prays "God, blind my master so that I may take with my hands and eat whatever I want."

Characteristics bestowed upon the dog include: fidelity, love, attachment and dedication up to death, is without malice, bravery, faithful, dirty, and smelly.
